WORDPLAY MAGAZINE REVIEW OCT 6TH 2012

While the nights are rapidly drawing in, it’s getting colder, wetter and we are relentlessly clutching at every last hint of summer, I’m presented with a copy of Cambridge based Commission’s debut album ’12 Months of Summer’ which is a very fitting name as 12 months of nice weather would be ideal and it’s probably also been about 12 months since we had a relevant amount of ‘summer’ weather.

My first expectations, going from the title alone, were that this album would be on an upbeat, summery, happy go lucky sort of vibe, but straight from the word go it is clear that overall, this album represents a much darker, grimmer mood, which is a lot more resemblant of a typical, dull British Summer.

Commission drops hard hitting bars on every track, the production is mostly handled by Deeptrunk 79 with a couple of joints from Rawtex, whilst Jabba Tha Kut handles the cuts on the track ‘Chrysomallus’
One thing which really stands out to me is the quality of the finished product and the artwork, it is clear to me that Commission has put a lot of time and pride into getting this album out and has given plenty of thought to its presentation as well as the music. The CD comes in a high quality, fold out card case, featuring really eye-catching artwork and photography by Alex Evans.

The opening track ‘After Parties’ sets the tone and sets us up for what will be a journey into the deepest, darkest depths of Commissions thought process as he tells of the darker reality of late nights spent at random after parties. The rest of the album features a good range of different tracks and subjects with the lighthearted track ‘I think you got me’ which is on a bit of a more upbeat electro vibe with a real catchy hook.

The album is on CD format only for just £5!
